Yes, it is quite easy to use - I traded around a few of the Joltik I bred to get other Pokémon! Communication is pretty limited, though. You can send a written note through the Pokémon you trade, but otherwise it's simply emoticon communication. Probably to help curb profanity? It's advertised as family-friendly.

But doesn't that negate the quality of trading with people? You have no idea what the Pokémon will be like. You have no clue about its temperament or experiences. I guess you could have communication with someone beforehand, but... It ruins a lot of the point of trading. It's more like picking Pokémon for a regional rarity or general aesthetics than establishing a real bond. Then again, given the lack of communication and variety in other regions in general, it wouldn't be that surprising that someone would want a certain species for breeding, or... [blah blah reasons why people would want certain pokémon blah blah research blah blah assistance or utility blah blah blah blah blah-]
